About

Thirty years on both sides of the table.

Social Intent is led by Matthew Hickey. He has run charities, marketed them, raised money for them, sat on their boards, and advised the companies and foundations that fund them. That is why the advice is practical.

Matthew Hickey

Matthew has been a chief executive, a development director and a marketing director, and has stepped in as interim chief executive and interim marketing director when organisations needed a steady hand.

He was chief executive of The Children's Literacy Charity, marketing director at the British Council, and interim marketing director at DKMS UK, where he led an integrated national campaign. At Gordon Moody, the gambling treatment charity, he was part of the leadership team that grew the organisation from £1 million to £7 million, developing new residential services and the properties to house them.

He has commissioned services as well as delivered them, judged for Young Enterprise, and advised boards across the charity, gambling and financial sectors. He is a trustee of Do-it Trust and chair of a Welsh-language nursery in his home village.

He holds a master's degree from Manchester Metropolitan University and a bachelor's degree from Loughborough University, and is a former elite swimmer, which may explain the interest in what it takes to keep going.

Matthew lives in Llanbedrog on the Llŷn Peninsula in North Wales and works across the UK, on site and remotely.

What we believe

  • Clarity of purpose comes first

When all around you is murky, the job is to help you see the light, then act on it.

  • Evidence beats opinion

Including our own. Every finding is labelled and rated, and we say what we could not establish.

  • Honest challenge is a kindness

Aimed at systems, not people, and said to the board as much as to the executive.

  • Being more charitable is good business

Purpose and profit are not opposites. The companies that get this win work and keep people.

  • The people you serve are the experts

Lived experience belongs in the evidence, not in a box on the last page.

Not sure where to start? That's what the call is for.

Thirty minutes, no obligation. Tell us what you're working on and we'll say what we'd do next, and whether we're the right people to do it.
